2020 Will Be A Record Year For Blockchain IP, Study Finds

Law360 (September 22, 2020, 5:56 PM EDT) — The number of patent applications involving blockchain filed in the first half of 2020 almost equals the total from all of 2019, with IBM and Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba obtaining the most patents in this area, according to a new report from KISSPatent.

In a report released Thursday, the Netherlands-based startup consulting company said “blockchain patents are skyrocketing,” and that large companies are mainly behind the increase. New York-based IBM currently has the most patents involving the digital ledger system, but Alibaba is set to overtake it by the end of the year, the report said.
