Forbush makes comeback but falls to Greyhounds

Peyton Compton goes up for a shot.

MOUNT AIRY — The North Surry Greyhounds took an impressive win over the Forbush Falcons in a Friday night matchup on Jan. 27.

North Surry’s Jackson Smith takes the first point of the game with a powerful drive to the basket. Cam Taylor follows his lead with a layup and James McCreary makes the third consecutive Greyhound layup. With that impressive scoring streak, the home side of the gymnasium erupts in cheers and Forbush Head Coach, Jon Huggins, quickly pauses the game with a timeout. North Surry doesn’t slow down despite the Falcon’s defensive efforts as Jahreece Lynch nails a 3-point shot, yet another layup from Smith, and an accompanying layup from Cam Taylor. The score is 11-0 for the home team, but not for long. Lynch hits two consecutive 3 point shots, earning over half of his scoring percentage within the first five minutes of the first quarter.

The Falcons put themselves on the board with a 3-point shot by Peyton Compton and a few putbacks under the basket. Caden Funk gives Forbush fans a reason to cheer as he seals the first quarter with a stunning 3 point buzzer beater. This shot made the score North Surry 25 and Forbush 9.

The beginning of the second quarter marked the beginning of a Forbush comeback. Compton contributed the first points of the quarter and then three more with a fouled jump shot and subsequent free throw. Joe Hennings makes his debut with an incredible block at the rim and taking potential points away from the home team’s Jackson Smith. In turn, Forbush makes the game a 10 point deficit. Compton and Cannon Doub continued to lessen the score gap with 3 point shots now making the lead achievable with a mere 2 points. Despite an impressive comeback from the Falcon’s and an unbelievable 3 pointer from Compton with a minute left in the half, Forbush still trail the Greyhounds.

Kolby Watson claims the start of the second half with a 3-pointer bringing the score to North Surry 42 and Forbush 35. McCreary proves to be unstoppable on offense as he adds nine points throughout the third quarter and ends the game with a total of twenty-three. The third quarter is a blur of defensive stops by Hennings and 3 point shots from both teams. Smith pulls off a swift reverse layup to end the 3rd and the 4th begins with a score of 56-53, North Surry keeping the lead.

An early Forbush field goal makes the game the closest it’s been with a one-point difference. Minutes later Compton ties the game at 60 all with 5:30 left in the game. Compton is deserving of his spot on the Falcon’s roster by making 3’s far behind the line look effortless and ending the game with a shocking thirty-two points. A scoring streak by North Surry decreases Forbush’s chances of a comeback and ultimately seals the win for the Greyhounds.

This showdown between two talented teams was a pleasure to watch as it was a wonderful demonstration of raw talent and hard work from both teams. Overall, Forbush had three athletes to score in double digits; Peyton Compton (32), Cannon Doub (13), Joe Hennings (13). North Surry finished the night with four athletes in double digits; Jahreece Lynch (16), Jackson Smith (19), James McCreary (23), and Kolby Watson (13).

Forbush will see the court again in East Bend on Feb. 1 against Surry Central. The Greyhounds will be in action at home against West Wilkes on Feb. 1.
