A volunteer reserve deputy of four years shot a 30-year-old man in Broad Ripple Saturday, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday identified Lt. Jason Lee as the deputy involved in the shooting of William Manery. Lee joined the agency’s Reserve Division in April 2017 and has donated “hundreds of hours of time” annually to the sheriff’s office, officials said.

IndyStar has requested his personnel file.

Manery was shot in his white Jeep Cherokee about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, after Marion County deputies were alerted to his location by Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office in Tennessee, where Manery had open warrants.

Deputies found Manery asleep in his Jeep in the 6300 block of Westfield Boulevard, north of Broad Ripple Avenue, and ordered him out of the car. Police said Manery turned the car on and reversed it into a marked police vehicle, striking a curb, and drove forward again, hitting a parked unmarked sheriff’s office vehicle.

Lee shot at the car and struck Manery, who was taken to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in serious but stable condition. He was reported to be in good condition Sunday night.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department — tasked with handling the investigation — initially described Manery as possibly armed and dangerous, but no weapon was found. IMPD said Manery’s warrants included flight to avoid and vehicular aggravated assault in Tennessee and a stolen vehicle warrant in South Carolina.

Deputies at the scene did not have body-worn cameras or in-car dash cameras. Responding IMPD officers at the scene activated their body-worn cameras as they arrived.

Lee remains on administrative leave as IMPD’s investigation continues. The sheriff’s office is conducting an internal investigation.
