Coinbase engineer ‘kicked knife attacker off bike’ in central London stabbing

A Coinbase employee helped fight off attackers in a dramatic stabbing in central London on 6 October, according to reports.

Toby Hamand, 36, told The Telegraph he kicked a knife attacker off his bike after he and an accomplice reportedly stabbed three people in a robbery near Liverpool Street station.

Three people were reportedly stabbed while a fourth person was pushed to the floor on 6 October outside 22 Bishopsgate in the City of London.

Hamand has worked as a software engineer for crypto exchange Coinbase since May 2022, the company confirmed.

He was cycling from his home in Victoria Park to his Eastcheap office when he came across the incident.

He told the newspaper: “It was sort of half on the road, half on the pavement. There were people all over the place, so I got a bit closer to see what the hell was going on.

“I pretty quickly realised that there were two guys who were wearing bandanas — they were covering their faces.

“There were some people who were sort of trying to break up the fight. There were some people on the floor. I pretty quickly realised that it was these two guys who were trying to rob someone.

“One of them got on a bike — it looked like he’d stolen it. He got on his bike. I kicked the wheel before he could get going to, you know, stop him from escaping.

“There was someone else who was trying to break up the fight and I said: ‘These guys are trying to rob someone.’

“And then the other guy who was also with a bike, he brandished his knife at me. He held it in his fist and sort of raised his hand up to sort of show me and I immediately was like, ‘Okay, not going anywhere near this.’.

“And then they just went off on their bikes.”
