Slick roads lead to multiple wrecks Monday morning

UPDATED at 8:15 a.m.: Yadkin and Wilkes Schools have announced schools will be closed for students today. Wilkes County will have teacher optional work day.

Unexpectedly slick roadways have caused multiple accidents in Yadkin County just after 7 a.m. on Monday morning, said Yadkin EMS Director Keith Vestal.

“The temperatures were down about 25 degrees, a little before 7 it stared raining and it’s still raining and the roads just turned into a solid sheet of ice and there are accidents all over the county,” Vestal said, just after 7:30 a.m. on Monday.

He urged caution or avoiding travel if possible during the morning hours until temperatures get above freezing.

Yadkin County Schools and Wilkes County Schools first announced a two-hour delay and then decided, due to worsening conditions, to close entirely. Elkin City Schools are operating on a three-hour delay.
