The rapid progress of blockchain technology is showing no signs of slowing down. In the past few decades, several phenomena of blockchain made the impossible, possible. One such pioneering company that is leading the blockchain and digital currency mining industry is Hut 8 Mining Corp. It is a proud Canadian company and one of North America’s largest and most established digital asset miners that have been leading innovation and championing open- decentralized systems since 2018. With two sites located in the energy-rich Alberta and a third site underway in North Bay, Ontario, Hut 8 has one of the highest installed capacity rates in the industry and holds more self-mined Bitcoin than any crypto miners or publicly-traded companies globally.

An Experienced Leader with a Growth-Paced Trajectory

Jaime Leverton, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hut 8 Mining Corp, is the leader behind this booming company. Jaime joined Hut 8 in December 2020. She started her career in technology and found herself fortunate to receive significant and challenging opportunities that helped her to build a reputation as a turnaround expert. Before stepping in as CEO of Hut 8, Jaime served in increasingly senior leadership positions at some of Canada’s leading technology companies and was often tasked with spearheading large-scale strategic transformations.

Jaime enunciates that her career has offered her various experiences in traditional finance, tech, data centres, and crypto. She aims to leverage her unique perspective on digital and financial industries to build a strategy that will support and propel Hut 8’s fast-paced growth trajectory. The team at Hut 8 is defining the crypto revolution and creating value for generations to come through a mixture of innovation, imagination, and passion, along with a balance-sheet-first approach of the company’s business decisions.

Breaking the Stereotypes of Male Chauvinism in Blockchain

Jaime says that her greatest achievement has always been the incredible teams she has built and worked with, including the current leadership team at Hut 8. Every day, she gets to work with spectacularly talented and motivated experts who share the same ambitions as her and 50% of them are women, which is not something anyone sees in business often enough.

As one of the far too few women, leading a publicly-traded company, Jaime takes great pride in serving as an example to other women who may not have been able to imagine themselves in her position, particularly when it comes to crypto: a tech segment known for an acute lack of gender diversity.

When she first started her career in technology, there were very few women in the industry and it was a challenge. Jaime was instructed to act and dress in certain ways to be taken seriously. That advice, though well-meaning, was wrong and it was through these experiences that Jaime learnt her a most valuable lesson: “be authentic, trust in the gut, embrace change and get comfortable with uncertainty.”

Jaime thinks that this applies to any leader or industry, but it seems especially fitting when it is about cryptocurrency. “Embracing technology is all about embracing change. It is about challenging the status quo by accepting new ways of doing things, new ways of thinking about the world, and new ways of doing business. Most often, reward follows a certain level of risk,” she claims.

Envisaging the Market Challenges to Gain Experience

Jaime confesses that she fell in love with technology at an early age and continued to follow that path throughout her education and then into her professional life. After completing her MBA, she took on the first role in her technology career: Inside Sales at IBM Canada Ltd.

She adds that later, she went on to make new and potentially riskier moves. New divisions are often the first to go when it is time to trim a budget. Nevertheless, she accepted a position at IBM as a leader of the new Digital Media Emerging Business Opportunities (EBO) team. This was the first time where Jaime was responsible for the activities across all of Canada, rather than regional executions and the program was a huge success. Jaime recalls that since the new EBO division operated outside the traditional IBM structure, her small team had the freedom to operate nimbly in the emerging categories of digital signage and digital merchandising.

This first encounter with a high-risk, high-reward situation allowed her to get comfortable with uncertainty.

Jaime presumes that she then went on to join BlackBerry in 2014, at a time when many people were leaving the company. “People told me I was crazy to make the move, but I was attracted to the opportunity that BlackBerry represented. The business was at a critical moment and diving in headfirst was not an easy choice, but it offered great potential for success,” says Jamie.

At the time, the CEOs of Blackberry and T-Mobile were in a bitter, high-profile feud, which escalated so far that the two organizations had dissolved their business agreement. She knew a strong relationship with T-Mobile was essential for the company’s success in the U.S. and took on the task of repairing the relationship. It was a high-profile and high-risk negotiation that, if unsuccessful, would be a black mark on one’s professional career. She could not ask someone else to do it, so she herself led the successful negotiations on behalf of Blackberry for six months.

Jaime claims that these challenges helped her develop early on in her professional career and made her realize the passion she has for leading bold change and transformation within companies. Jaime actively began to seek out those roles right up to take the one she possesses today.

Leaders Should Dive in and Get Creative in the Tech Industry

Jaime states that inclusivity, creativity, and passion are the three vital attributes of becoming a leader. “Leadership is giving everyone a voice and bringing energizing passion to one’s work that can serve as an example. We lose when diverse perspectives are undervalued or simply not present,” asserts Jamie. She believes that great leaders do not always come up with the big ideas but they also know what to do with them once they are heard. Jamie feels that leaders in this field should know how to work with a team and how to use their voices to create a positive impact in the tech industry. She further adds on to say that the blockchain industry is at a fast pace which means that the leaders must always be ready to dive in and get creative about whatever it throws their way.

Innovating to Support Greater Adoption of Bitcoin

Jaime reveals that Hut 8 is unique as a miner; it serves as a minter of Bitcoin. The company provides value through the appreciation of the substantial Bitcoin holdings in its balance sheet, which means it takes the burden of protecting digital assets for the investors.

She highlights that the innovation carried out at Hut 8 aims to drive the industry as a whole forward and support greater adoption of Bitcoin. Right now, the team is focused on driving responsible mining in a way that creates sustainable and enduring value for the shareholders, stakeholders, and the global environment.

Jaime says that Hut 8 believes in Bitcoin as an asset class and this asset class is ultimately converging with traditional finance. For that reason, another focus of the company’s innovation is to develop solutions that facilitate to be the merger of old and new to shape a stronger digital future and bolster North America’s share in the tech innovation globally.

The Future Ahead: Looking Beyond Cryptocurrency

Jaime utters that the company’s executive leadership team has big goals for Hut 8. It aspires to not only become a leading Bitcoin miner but also a great tech innovator by helping to bridge the gap between traditional and nascent iterations of the high-performance compute and leading innovative solutions with the potential to scale beyond cryptocurrency to shape and advance other industries.

In the early days of cryptocurrency, the social discussion was centred around Bitcoin and crypto replacing fiat currencies as the currency of the future, says Jaime. But the industry is actually witnessing Bitcoin as a growing asset class that is increasingly considered as the digital gold and a hedge against inflation because of capital injections into the global fiat system.

She adds that Hut 8’s team believes Bitcoin will continue to grow in value and as Jaime mentioned before, it will ultimately converge with traditional finance in a way that creates a more efficient and equitable system.

Words of Wisdom for Future Tech Leaders

Jaime articulates that the industry is at a critical moment and believes that today’s innovation within the industry will shape the future for years to come. Her advice to the leaders is to take the opportunity in front and to think about the big picture by making bold moves with a future-forward lens and keep the desired standards for the future as a top consideration in every leadership decision they make today.

“The nascent nature of the industry offers leaders the opportunity to correct some of the weaknesses in the traditional methods. Strong advocacy for diversity in the industry is important now to ensure the people leading it in the future align with the tenants of Bitcoin: sovereignty and equality for all,” concludes Jamie.
