Day two of the Good Hope Country Day School (GHCDS) Beach Volleyball Skills Challenge brought more rain and wind as teams had to compete against their opponents and the elements at Tamarind Reef Beach on St. Croix on Sunday.
“Beach volleyball was the answer to providing volleyball athletes an opportunity to continue skill development and competitive school spirit while limiting the impact of COVID,” said GHCDS coach Laurie Dunton. “Our athletes have not competed in well over a year, and this territorial tournament brought friends, teams, schools, and islands together.”
Eight teams from St. Croix, two from St. Thomas, and two from St. John battled from 8:00 a.m. until late in the afternoon in this double-elimination tournament. “For the first Beach Volleyball in the territory in as long as I can remember, I think it went well,” said Tournament Director Elijah Mondesir. “A lot of the athletes from all schools surprised me in how well they performed once they shook the rust and jitters off.”
Kirra Lambert & Syrena Carter of GHCDS defeated Briana James & Mia Monero of the St. Croix Educational Complex High School 21-18; 21-17 in the championship game. Lambert & Carter finished the event with a perfect 4-0 record. Complex’s James and Monero played twice as many matches clawing their way through the losers bracket, finishing with a 6-2 record.
