The Pokémon Company is teaming up with prominent artist Daniel Arsham and Japanese art gallery Nanzuka to develop an exhibition that utilizes the archaeology of Pokémon to depict the inevitable, endless passage of time, and to drum up anticipation for the event, the company has released a teaser for an animated short titled “A Ripple in Time.” The full short will debut at the full exhibition this February. You can watch the short below, which features Celebi taking Ash and Pikachu on a journey into the far future.
Daniel Arsham teamed up with Kunihiko Yuyama (series director for the 1997 Pokémon anime) to produce “A Ripple in Time.” Arsham, who is also heading up next month’s artistic exhibit, specializes in “fictional archaeology.”
“A Ripple in Time” invokes similar themes as next month’s Pokémon exhibit, challenging viewers to grapple with the concept of a distant future by showing us how familiar objects and structures may erode and change over a long period of time. Nanzuka described Arsham’s provocative field of study as follows:
Arsham’s sculptural works made of materials such as pyrite, selenite, volcanic ash, glass, obsidian, growler rocks, crystal, and bronze, invite viewers on a journey through time. Through looking at buildings, a camera, toys, and cars etc. that have changed over time, viewers are able to imagine the possibility of various objects that are present around us to become nothing but fossilized artifacts in the distant future that lies a million years ahead. Alternatively, Arsham’s work provokes us to think about our very own existence.
“A Ripple in Time” will debut in full at next month’s Pokémon x Arsham exhibit. Until then, we’ll have to wonder what else is in store for the rest of the video.
