MOUNT AIRY — Smart defensive plays and strong offensive strategies led the Forbush women to a solid win against North Surry on Jan. 27 with a final score of 54-43.
The Forbush girl’s made the trip over to North Surry High School for an early 4 p.m. game against the Greyhounds. This Friday night victory is the team’s seventh consecutive win and earning the squad a nearly 75% winning percentage.
North Surry kept the game tight throughout the game’s entirety, leaving a less than five point deficit in each quarter. Callie Allen took charge on the Greyhound’s offensive as the only player scoring in double digits with a total of 17 points.
Cynthia Chaire kicked off North Surry’s home game with a 3-point shot and taking the lead from the Falcons. Sarah Mauldin assists her team with a steal and keeping the small, yet consistent lead. The Falcons narrows the first quarter lead with a 3-pointer from Carrie Vestal. Vestal’s 3-point shot was her first of many as she claimed the 3-point line and contributing an impressive 19 points for a Falcon victory.
The Falcon’s took flight in the second quarter starting with a one point lead. A quick layup increases the lead, followed by a 3-point shot by Brooke Davis and Laci Mendenhall blocking a North Surry shot. White’s Carrie Allen steal and layup assists the Greyhound’s comeback end the first half with North Surry at 19 and Forbush at 22.
Forbush’s Carrie Vestal drops a 3-point bomb early in the second half and pulling the Falcon’s further ahead. North Surry’s Callie Allen follows her lead by nailing a 3 point shot at the top of the key bringing the game closer NS 28 – F 29. Mauldin gives Surry the lead with a putback only to be stolen back by Natalie Scott of Forbush with a lucky 3-pointer. Vestal hits a three, once again, to give the Falcons the biggest lead of the second half NS 32- F 40.
North Surry’s bad luck at the 3-point line, yet another 3-point shot by Vestel and a smooth putback by Skylar Southard of Forbush solidifies the Falcon lead by ten points. Southard proves to not to be shy in the paint as she draws up fouls with 2.5 minutes left in the game. Reece Niston scores her first points of the game with a jumper and makes the game a single digit lead. Despite the competitive effort by the Lady Greyhounds, the Falcons leave Mount Airy with yet another win.
