The European Central Bank (ECB) has tapped Evelien Witlox, ING’s global director of payments, as program manager for its digital euro, effective Jan. 1.
- In her new role, Witlox will work alongside the senior management team of the Directorate General Market Infrastructure and Payments.
- Witlox will work on the ECB’s investigation phase of the project, which will run until October 2023. The project aims to address issues regarding the design and distribution of a digital euro, which must be able to meet the needs of Europeans while at the same time help prevent illicit activities and avoid undermining financial stability and monetary policy, the ECB said in a press release.
- The ECB has outlined a road map for the digital currency and is in the process of examining whether to introduce a central bank digital currency (CBDC) for retail payments.
