Lowe’s staff members deliver the park’s playground equipment to the site of the East Bend Town Square and enjoy lunch at Alex’s.
Despite numerous delays and supply issues progress is being made on the new East Bend Town Square park. Thanks to a grant from Lowes, the playground equipment installation began last week.
“Going forward, we expect the playground to be finished except for the surfacing in a few days,” said committee member Jan Hicks.
Park Committee Member Karen Matthews wrote the grant to Lowe’s Home Improvement for the playground. Hicks said a team from the Lowe’s store on Peter’s Creek Parkway came last Tuesday and helped unload the truck and put together the Orb Rocker (seesaw).
Alex’s Grill, across from the park location, assisted by providing lunch for the crew, Hicks said.
“Matt Pardue with Omega Construction estimates that they will begin to pour footings in early November with the concrete slabs for the structures (gazebo, picnic shelters, amphitheater, ticket booth) to follow soon after. Then the structures will be constructed probably late November to early December,” said Hicks. “Hennings Construction will then layout the walking trail and begin the installation of commemorative pavers, flagpole, bike rack and other amenities. Depending on the landscaper’s recommendation, grass and other plantings will take place as weather permits.”
Funding from the park has come in the form of grants and donations. The Park Committee is also selling comerative bricks which will be placed in the park. Hicks said additional donations have been coming in and there is great excitement for the project.
“We recently received $43,000 from the Tom Davis Fund to put toward the amphitheater. We have a couple of other grants under review, so our fundraising efforts have been very successful. The community really rallied around our raffle ticket sales which are almost complete. The Community Yard Sale at the library netted over $5,700 for the park. Everyone involved in the project is really appreciative of the support that’s been given. Several people have stopped by the site, blown their horns as they drove by, and made all kinds of positive comments about the efforts to move forward. We all can’t wait for everything to be ready,” said Hicks.
