Moving business demand skyrockets following housing boom

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -The housing boom is creating ripple effects on the moving business causing demand to skyrocket.

NBC15 checked in with more than 10 companies in our viewing area who said they’re all trying to keep up with demand.

“It’s a roller coaster. We’ve grown so much in the past year,” DeAndrew Foy, Top Notch Movers owner said.

Foy’s moving business came to a screeching halt when Covid hit.

“Business slowed down. We weren’t sure if we could keep running,” he said.

Top Notch Movers was one of many moving companies feeling the pinch.

Foy said people losing their jobs resulted in less customers planning to move.

“It was really hard. Things are picking up now,” he said. “We came through it and things are better than ever.”

Now, he said the phone lines stay busy and the trucks remain loaded.

“We have phones ringing off the hook. We have moves going out of state two to three times per week on top of other local moves,” Foy said.

Company owners said this is already peak time for people to pack up and move, and the booming housing market caused demand to skyrocket.

“I’ll take a five minute phone call then after five minutes, I’ll have five other missed calls to get to,” Mike Nikola, Big Dog Movers owner said.

He said keeping up with demand is tough with a limited staff.

“Right now we don’t have enough guys to meet demand,” he said.

He said being too busy is a good problem to have.

“The moving industry I would call it recession proof,” he said. “That’s something Covid didn’t change at all. People still need to move after their lease.”

Company owners said if you need moving services, get on the books early. Some businesses said they’re already filled up with appointments through the end of June.
