A Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot a 30-year-old man Saturday evening in Broad Ripple while attempting to serve a warrant, according to police.

The man, who had a warrant in Tennessee for aggravated assault with a weapon, was taken to a local hospital where he was in serious but stable condition, said Lt. Shane Foley, a spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The man who was shot appears to have been unarmed. “No firearm has been located at this time,” Foley said.

Asked what led the deputy to fire on the man, Foley said: “That will be part of the investigation. We don’t have an answer for you at this time.”

Foley said six deputies had been dispatched to serve the warrant, but it was unclear how many were at the scene when the shooting occurred. They located the man in the driver’s seat of a vehicle outside the River House apartment building near the 6300 block of Westfield Boulevard at about 5:30 p.m., Foley said.

Foley did not address what happened between the time deputies located the man and the moment a deputy shot him.

As police investigated Saturday night, a white SUV could be seen behind yellow ribbons of police tape. The driver side door was open and several items that appeared to be clothing were laying nearby.

Police flooded the area after the shooting. At least 15 law enforcement vehicles were on site. A few curious passersby from nearby bars and restaurants stopped to watch the scene, but the area was relatively quiet on a rainy evening following last week’s NCAA festivities.

Foley said the Marion County Sheriff’s Office is not equipped with body cameras, though IMPD officers who responded to the shooting did have body cameras. He said investigators are seeking any other security videos or other footage of the incident.

IMPD is handling the investigation, while the Marion County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal administrative investigation, Foley said. The deputy, who has not been identified, will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard in cases involving police shootings.
