EAST BEND — On Friday night, the Forbush Falcons football team hosted the Surry Central Golden Eagles. It was the second game of the Western Piedmont Athletic Conference spring football season, and the Falcons were looking to continue their win streak. Forbush was coming off of a 64-0 win over Atkins, while the Eagles had taken a 22-8 win over West Stokes. Forbush put together an impressive four quarters to take a 41-7 conference win.
In the first quarter of the game, the Falcons put together great plays on both offense and defense. On Forbush’s first defensive play of the game, Luke Hurley came up with a fumble recovery. After Forbush came up with the ball, the Falcons were able to capitalize on the recovery. On fourth and 14, Forbush quarterback, Casey Graham, tossed the ball backwards to Aiden Lyon for a reverse pass. Lyons looked down the field for the Falcons and found a wide open Joe Hennings. Hennings powered his way into the end zone which gave the Falcons their first touchdown of the night. The point after attempt was successful by David Guadarrama, and the Falcons led Surry Central 7-0 with 8:27 left in the first quarter.
On Forbush’s next defense play, the Falcons once against forced a fumble. Bradley Bowman recovered the ball for the Falcons, and the home team took over on the 31-yard line. Forbush was unable to convert the recovery into substantial yardage. The Eagles forced the Falcons to punt the ball away on fourth down.
Two drives later, the Falcons were facing third and ten. Graham put the ball into the air towards his intended receiver, but before the ball reached the Forbush player the Eagles came up with an interception. The Eagles took off down the field to successfully complete a 63-yard pick-six. The point after went through the uprights, and the game was tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Forbush was able to answer back to Surry Central’s touchdown. On third-and-seven, from the 12-yard line, Graham looked down the field and passed the ball to Hennings once again. Hennings was wide open in the end zone, and the Falcons put another touchdown on the board. The point after attempt was wide right, but the Falcons had taken a 13-7 lead with 9:48 left before halftime.
On Forbush’s final drive before the halftime break, Graham started their drive with a pass to Derek Matthews. The pass set Forbush up on the 25-yard line and gave the home team a new set of downs. The next play was a highlight for the Falcons, as Graham once again went to the air. Graham’s pass hit the hands of Travon Martin for a 20-yard gain. The Falcons were cruising down the field, as they faced first-and-goal from the five-yard line. Setting up under his center, Graham called for the ball and put it into the hands of Matthews. The junior running back powered his way into the end zone for a touchdown. Forbush decided to go for the two-point conversion, and the play was perfectly executed. Graham handed the ball off to Matthews once again and the Falcons had taken a 21-7 lead over Surry Central.
The home team had put together a strong first half performance, as they held a two touchdown lead over the Eagles at the halftime break.
After the break, Forbush continued on with its impressive plays across the field. Defensively, the Falcons came up with the stops it needed to keep Surry Central out of the end zone. Forbush had another fumble recovery, as well as an interception.
On offense Matthews put up two additional touchdowns, and Dylan Hutchens also came up with a touchdown. The Falcons held strong to put up a 41-7 WPAC win over Surry Central.
Casey Graham was 9-18, for 162 yards. Graham had two touchdown passes, one interception and his longest pass was a 41-yard pass to Matthews for a touchdown. Aiden Lyon took one snap for the Falcons, and came up with 17-yard.
Luke Bennett had nine carries for 27-yards, Dylan Hutchens had six carries for 38-yards, and Derek Matthews had 11 carries for 54-yards. Receiving wise, Forbush put up big numbers. Aiden Lyon and Devin Diclemente had one reception each, Joe Hennings had two reception, while Martin and Matthews both had three receptions.
Luke Bennett and Caleb Boles both had interceptions for the Falcons. Bowman had one fumble recovery and Luke Hurley had two recovers.
The Falcons are now 2-0 in the conference and will face North Surry on Friday night in Mount Airy. The Greyhounds are 0-2 and have yet to score a touchdown this season.
