Lithuanians from different parts of the world responded to the invitation with great enthusiasm and creativity. Lithuanians in Los Angeles painted a rooftop at St. Casimir Lithuanian parish in the colors of the Lithuanian flag and also brought Lithuanian flag to the famous Hollywood sign. Lithuanians in Sardinia created a heart shaped installation on the beach using 400 flags that happened to be visited by two dolphins. In Rome, a group of children created a sea of tri-colored hearts in front of the Coliseum. The Lithuanian flag was raised on a snowy mountaintop in Canada and even seen underwater in Singapore. Many Lithuanian flags waved in Norway, Italy, Canada, United States, Belgium, Ireland, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Germany, Austria, Spain, Australia, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Oman, Indonesia, Turkey and other parts of the world.
“This idea was inspired by the blooming meadow of forget-me-not flowers created by the Consulate General of Lithuania in Los Angeles at the Santa Monica beach to mark the 30th anniversary of the Lithuanian Freedom Defenders’ Day”, said Daiva Lapėnaitė, Chairwoman of the Italian Lithuanian community in Sardinia. “We wanted this meadow to spread vividly in the symbolic colors of the restored Lithuanian state flag and ripple around the globe, reminding us all that Lithuania is not just a tiny dot on the world map and that the Lithuanian spirit is alive in every Lithuanian heartbeat. Let us show that Lithuanians – both in Lithuania and living abroad – can unite in the creative process of a beautiful and prosperous Lithuania.”
Vaidas Matulaitis, chairman of PR committee of the Lithuanian World Community (LWC) commented: “It’s amazing to see how well this initiative resonated with Lithuanians abroad despite the fact that we are under influence of COVID-19 pandemic. For us this is yet another proof that Lithuanian diaspora is highly patriotic and creative. In the name of the board members of LWC I say “ačiū” to all participants and co-creators of this great idea”.
