Eredivisie Moves onto the Blockchain
Another major list of soccer players is moving onto the blockchain.
The Dutch Eredivisie league, which counts Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, and Feyenoord among its teams, is launching on the Ethereum-based fantasy soccer game Sorare. Marc Rondah, business development manager at Eredivisie CV, said of the update:
“Our decision was largely driven by our excitement for their ambitious vision of building a global fantasy football game with digital cards. At the forefront of innovation, we are always looking ahead, looking to the future, to offer our fans new experiences.”
The players will be made available as digital collectibles. Sorare lets users buy and trade player cards to build a five-a-side team. The teams can then be entered into tournaments, with prizes paid out in digital cards and ETH.
Sorare has already signed many of the world’s biggest soccer clubs, including Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. Some collectibles have accrued huge value: last year, a unique card of Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé sold for $65,000.
According to a press release in December 2020, the game generated $1.9 million in card sales.
The cards on Sorare are a form of non-fungible token (NFT). Because the tokens live on the blockchain, they have provable scarcity, and they can’t be replicated for more than one owner.
Much of the recent hype surrounding Ethereum has been within the NFT space. While Sorare helps bridge the sport and NFT worlds, they’ve also taken off in digital art and music.
The Eredivisie is the highest-ranked league in Dutch soccer. If Sorare continues to attract other key teams as it has done over the last few months, it could soon cement its place as the leading soccer game on Ethereum.
