FIREWORKS STORY: Hollie Doyle became the first woman to ride a winner at the International Jockeys’ Championship in Hong Kong on Wednesday (December 9). The 24-year old Englishwoman, who this year had already achieved a record 117 number of British Flat Race winners in a season for a woman, capped a superb year by guiding home 11-10 favourite Harmony N Blessed in the final race of the day, finishing ahead of Ryan Moore-ridden Grateful Heart in second, with her boyfriend Tom Marquand third on Wind N Grass. Doyle’s win put her in joint-third place overall in the event, won by Australia’s Zac Purton. Twelve jockeys from around the world competed in the four-race event. Emma-Jayne Wilson in 2007 and Chantal Sutherland two years later were the two women to have previously competed in the International Jockeys’ Championships, but neither won a race.
