Italian gin Seven Hills brings blockchain technology into bottle redesign

Italian gin brand Seven Hills has looked to the past and the future in a packaging redesign.

The brand’s new look was inspired by the Italian landscape – the crucible of Roman civilisation and culture – and a desire to portray the authenticity of its Italian roots and locally sourced botanicals and materials.

The new bottle features a bespoke cap and seal made from recyclable materials and a bespoke bottle design using Italian glass, and comes in recycable cardboard boxes made near its distillery, Torino Distillati.

It has also become one of the first drinks brands to incorporate blockchain technology into its packaging. QR codes have been printed onto the embossed bottle labels, which when scanned will lead consumers to a website detailing Seven Hills’ ingredients, distillation process and where the ingredients are sourced from. There is also a loyalty reward scheme built in to the technology.

Italian-born Filippo Previero established Seven Hills in 2014 with a decade of experience in the food and drink industry behind him and a wish to celebrate the best of his home country in the gin. Its botanicals – including chamomile, pomegranate, artichoke, rose hip and blood orange – were used by the ancient Romans for medicinal and culinary purposes. The gin is made in a vacuum pot still at lower temperatures for more efficient energy consumption.

Seven Hills Gin is available online from sites including Ocado, Master of Malt and The Whisky Exchange and from wholesalers in Italy, the UK, Germany and Japan.
