The second phase of the Yadkin County Memorial Park at Lake Hampton will be officially unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday at 1 p.m.
An 18-hole disc golf course, seven primitive campsites with bathhouse, additional trails and a dog park have been added to the site as part of the phase two project.
“We are very excited about the expansion of Yadkin Memorial Park,” said County Manager Lisa Hughes. “The expansion will offer citizens and guests another disc golf course within the county, more walking/biking trails, a dog park and primitive camping. W.C. Construction and County staff have done a fabulous job on this project.”
The Yadkin Memorial Park first opened in 2014 offering fishing and duck hunting on the 138.5 acre lake. The park now boasts nearly five miles of hiking trails, a climbing playground and swings, picnic shelters and boat and kayak rentals as well as the new features.
Park staff anticipate that the campsites will become a popular feature of the park. The first of the campsites is a universally accessible site with accessible picnic table and area for tent set up. The campsite bathhouse has two restrooms and two shower/changing room areas. An online registration platform is in the works where campers may register and pay to use the campsites which will be available for $15 per night.
The dog park will be two separate areas, one for smaller dogs and the other for larger.
The park’s new 18-hole disc golf course was designed by George Sappenfield. Sappenfield, of Jonesville, is Professional Disc Golf Association Hall of Fame member who designed the first competitive disc golf course for an officially sanctioned event in the late 60s. The course is designed for beginners, said Parks and Recreation Assistant Director Caleb Poplin.
Yadkin County made use of two Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grants for both phases of the park thus far. The total cost for Phase II of the park was $1,139,720 with $250,000 coming from the PARTF grant and the remaining $889,720 paid by the county. The first phase of the park was completed at a cost of $1,340,515 with a PARTF grant of $500,000 and the county paying $840,515.
Hughes said the long-term plan for the park includes a third phase which would feature horseback/walking trails and a RV Campground.
