CASPER, Wyo — The Wyoming Blockchain Stampede opening ceremonies begin Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 8 a.m. for people to experience the event’s free virtual environment, according to University of Wyoming (UW) release.Governor Mark Gordon will give the opening address at 8:00 am Wednesday.
The virtual event, hosted by UW, is an opportunity to become acquainted with the many programs being offered by the Wyoming Blockchain Stampede.
Blockchain technology is decentralised system of transaction records in a shared network. Information about each transaction is encoded in the next connected “block,” and the network is updated for all users with each transaction. Technology advocates say it more secure because attempts to manipulate any transaction visibly disrupts the entire network.

Nicole Choi, chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance, said the technology has the potential to disrupt traditional financial institutions, eliminate costly intermediaries, uncover business opportunities that bring value to society, shrink the settlement time of financial contracts, and transform the landscape of legal contracts.
In 2019, Wired Magazine reported that Wyoming’s “transformation into a blockchain booster is somewhat legendary in cryptocurrency circles,” and that investments in blockchain and cryptocurrency are being looked at to as a way to replace flagging state revenue from the energy industry.
“The ethos of blockchain and the ethos of Wyoming are very similar,” said Caitlin Long, cofounder of the Wyoming Blockchain Coalition, in the article.
Last week, Governor announced that Wyoming had became the first U.S. state to approve a banking charter for digital assets.
Participation
Those interested in participating can do so by registering for free at www.wyohackathon.io. Participants will get a virtual tour the expo floor and watch as startups pitch new ideas and legislators make new laws driving economic diversity, UW said.
“We are extremely excited to come together this year at the 2020 Wyoming Blockchain Stampede, and see old friends and meet new ones from around the globe as we converge with everyone in our virtual reality environment,” said Larry Beck, LODE director of technology.
The Wyoming Blockchain Stampede, composed of several events from Sept. 23-Oct. 24, will be livestreamed within the free virtual environment, uniting worldwide participants with thought leaders, legislators and change makers at the forefront of major impacts to the world’s future in blockchain technology, according to event organizers.
Events will include, as stated on the Wyo Hackathon 2020 website:
- The Select Committee’s public meeting September 23 and 24, to draft legislation and take stakeholder input. The public is welcome and encouraged to offer comments for the committee for their consideration.
- The Sandcastle Invitational on September 24, a startup qualifier competition, seeking the best and most promising blockchain, AI, and other technology startups to compete in Laramie and then Dubai for the Sandcastle Challenge finale.
- The all-day Stampede Law Conference on September 25, to educate, leverage, and frame the benefits of what twenty new laws have to offer and the issues still to be tackled. Nine hours of Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits will be available (6-General, 3-Ethics) from the conference.
- The month-long virtual WyoHackathon, an event for software developers, from September 25 – October 24.
- Hand-in-hand with the WyoHackathon will be the Stampede Developers Conference from September 25 – October 24, featuring technical speakers and workshops to help attendees prepare for the WyoHackathon Challenges and to introduce new technologies, concepts, and emerging standards.
- The Stampede Business Conference on September 26, will feature speakers and workshops helping attendees understand the Wyoming legislative environment, the business opportunities presented by digital technologies like blockchain, and how these technologies will attain impact in Wyoming and the worldwide economy.
