BOONVILLE — Public access wireless internet has been installed at the Boonville town park, located at 135 Park Avenue. The WiFi hot spot has been added to help provide internet access for students doing remote learning due to the pandemic.
The community park location has an open air shelter as well as updated restroom facilities. The park is open during daylight hours.
“You would not believe the number of people that have no idea that Boonville has a park. Yes, we have a park, located at 135 Park Avenue, down behind Boonville Methodist Church,” said Boonville Commissioner Monica Craver. “For years it has not been taken care of until now. This COVID-19 pandemic has brought it out of extinction, so to say.”
“The community voiced that there was a need for internet access for students due to remote learning and using CARES Act funds, we have made that possible,” Craver explained. “The picnic shelter was renovated, and WiFi access was installed. People can sit under the picnic shelter or park nearby to gain access. The park hours are during daylight hours. Access to bathrooms are also available during that time.”
Much of the work on the park was completed by the town’s public works division as well as some other local contractors.
“Trevor Wall, with Wall Landscaping, cleared out the natural area of the park, making it more noticeable and usable,” said Craver. “Jamie Stiles, with Ecosys Technologies, LLC provided the WiFi and camera systems. Employees with our public works division were able to complete the majority of the renovations which includes a new roof, renovated bathrooms, electrical updates, fresh paint and tree removal.”
Craver said the wifi access is just the beginning and additional work is expected to be done on the park in the future.
“Landscaping is still in the progress. Picnic tables have been bought and will be installed throughout the park area. We hope to build off this needed service by updating the walking track and hopefully installing playground equipment, as funds allow. Any group, individual or business interested in helping via a donation or with their time, please contact the Boonville Town Hall,” Craver added.
To access the WiFi search under phone wireless settings and locate BNVL Park.
WiFi is also planned for the vacant lot owned by the town at the corner of N.C. 67 and U.S. 601.
