Digging deeper into the numbers, analysis by the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) by council area found that ex-industrial, inner-city and coastal areas felt the jobs pain most.
In Blackpool, one in eight residents are now claiming unemployment benefits, up from 7pc in March.
One in eleven residents are unemployed in Thanet and in Birmingham; while about one in 10 are unemployed in Wolverhampton, Middlesbrough, Haringey, Barking and Dagenham and Hull.
Notably, the Shetland and Orkney Islands, being remote and sparsely populated, were some of the least affected in terms of unemployment:
